Read and guess what the words in bold type mean.
- Their years of work culminated in a new invention.
- My sister is a mathematical genius. At the age of six she could easily do sums and solve some uncomplicated problems.
- Mankind means all humans considered as a group. Nowadays some people don't use this word because they think that it may hurt women's feelings, so they use the word "humankind" instead.
- The Smiths are our good friends. They live nearby, in the house round the corner.

- Nearby means situated or located close to a specific place, not far away; it denotes a short distance from a particular point of reference.
